Moving can be an exciting adventure but for children it’s often confusing, overwhelming, and a little scary. At Gerber Moving & Storage, we know a smooth move is actually about helping your whole household transition with as little stress as possible. Here are some of our favorite tips to make moving easier on your youngest family members.

1. Talk About the Move Early and Often

Give your kids time to process the news. Talk about where you’re going, why you’re moving, and what they can expect. Use age-appropriate language and answer their questions honestly, even if they’re tough.

2. Visit or Show Photos of the New Home

If possible, take your kids to see the new house or neighborhood ahead of time. If that’s not an option, show them pictures or take a virtual tour. Highlight the positives: a bigger room, a nearby park, or fun places to explore.

3. Involve Them in Packing

Let kids help pack their toys, books, or clothes. This gives them a sense of control and helps them feel like an important part of the move. Give them markers and stickers to decorate their boxes. This also helps movers place the boxes in the correct room on moving day!

4. Create a “Moving Day Kit”

Pack a small backpack or tote with comfort items—favorite toys, snacks, a water bottle, pajamas, and bedtime books. It’ll help them feel grounded during the first day or two in your new home.

5. Stick to Routines as Much as Possible

Kids thrive on routine. Try to keep meals, naps, and bedtimes consistent—even if everything else is in boxes or meals are on the floor, picnic-style! Predictability makes a chaotic move feel safer and more manageable.

6. Set Up Their Room First

As soon as you arrive, focus on getting your child’s room set up. Unpack their bedding, toys, and clothes early to create a familiar and comforting environment in the new space.

7. Allow for Big Emotions

Your child may feel excited, scared, sad, or all three. Let them talk about their feelings. Validate their emotions, even if they don’t understand exactly what’s happening.

8. Plan a Small “Welcome to the New Home” Celebration

Once the dust settles, celebrate with something special—like a pizza night on the floor, a new room decoration, or a walk to explore the neighborhood. Make the new place feel like home.
